Candela GentleMax Pro® Laser Hair Removal
Smooth Skin Starts Here
Reduce unwanted hair safely and effectively with the Candela GentleMax Pro®—an advanced, medical-grade laser system designed to treat a wide range of skin tones and hair types.
Unlike waxing, shaving, and tweezing, laser hair removal targets the hair follicle to produce long-lasting hair reduction. Treatments can also help reduce razor burn, ingrown hairs, and the irritation caused by frequent shaving.
Why We Use the GentleMax Pro®
The GentleMax Pro combines two proven laser technologies in one advanced system:

-
755 nm Alexandrite laser: Commonly used for lighter skin tones
-
1064 nm Nd:YAG laser: Designed to safely treat deeper skin tones
Having both wavelengths allows us to personalize your treatment according to your skin tone, hair color, hair thickness, treatment area, and individual goals.

The system also features Candela’s Dynamic Cooling Device™, which releases a brief cooling spray before each laser pulse to help protect the skin and make treatment more comfortable.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Hair contains a pigment called melanin. The laser delivers controlled energy that is absorbed by this pigment and converted into heat. The heat damages the targeted follicle, reducing its ability to produce new hair while minimizing injury to the surrounding skin.
Because hair grows in cycles, only follicles in the active growth stage respond optimally during each appointment. A series of treatments is therefore necessary for the best reduction.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients need a series of approximately six to eight treatments, although the exact number varies. Your treatment plan will depend on:

-
The area being treated
-
Hair color and thickness
-
Skin tone
-
Hormonal influences
-
Previous hair-removal methods
-
Your individual response to treatment
Appointments are generally spaced several weeks apart so we can target new hairs as they enter the active growth phase. Occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended.

Hormonal conditions and medications can affect hair growth and may influence the number of treatments or maintenance sessions needed.
What Does Treatment Feel Like?
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick snap or brief pulse of heat. The GentleMax Pro’s integrated cooling spray helps protect and cool the skin immediately before each laser pulse.
Treatment time depends on the area. Small areas may take only a few minutes, while larger areas such as the legs or back require more time.
Before Your Appointment
For a safer and more effective treatment:
-
Avoid tanning, tanning beds, and self-tanning products before treatment.
-
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed treatment areas.
-
Do not wax, tweeze, thread, or use an epilator for at least four weeks before treatment.
-
Shave the area approximately 24 hours before your appointment, unless instructed otherwise.
-
Arrive with clean skin free of lotion, deodorant, makeup, oils, and fragrance.
-
Tell us about all medications, supplements, recent procedures, medical conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any history of cold sores.
-
Notify us if you have recently used antibiotics, retinoids, or medications that increase sensitivity to light.
-
Let us know about any recent sun exposure, including vacations or outdoor events.
Do not discontinue prescription medication unless directed by the prescribing healthcare professional.
After Your Treatment
Mild redness, warmth, or small bumps around the hair follicles may occur and usually settle within a few hours to several days.
Following treatment:
-
Protect the area from direct sun exposure.
-
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily.
-
Avoid tanning and self-tanning products.
-
Avoid hot tubs, saunas, very hot showers, and strenuous exercise for the period recommended by your provider.
-
Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare until sensitivity resolves.
-
Do not pick, scratch, wax, or tweeze the treated area.
-
Allow treated hairs to shed naturally over the following days and weeks.
Contact our office promptly if you experience blistering, significant pain, crusting, or an unexpected skin reaction.
Am I a Good Candidate?
GentleMax Pro treatments can be customized for all skin tones. Laser hair removal generally works best when the hair contains visible pigment. Blonde, red, gray, and white hairs may respond poorly because they contain little or no melanin for the laser to target.
Treatment may need to be postponed if you have:

-
A recent tan or sunburn
-
Active infection, rash, or open skin in the treatment area
-
Certain photosensitizing medications
-
A history of abnormal scarring
-
An active cold-sore outbreak in the treatment area
-
Pregnancy or another condition for which elective laser treatment is not advised
A consultation allows us to evaluate your skin and hair, review your health history, discuss realistic expectations, and determine whether laser hair removal is appropriate for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal provides long-lasting or permanent hair reduction rather than a guarantee that every hair will be permanently eliminated. Any regrowth is often finer, lighter, and less noticeable. Maintenance treatments may be needed.

Can GentleMax Pro treat darker skin tones?
Yes. The GentleMax Pro includes a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength that allows appropriately trained providers to treat deeper skin tones. Your settings are selected based on your individual skin type and treatment history.

Can I wax between appointments?
No. Waxing, tweezing, threading, and epilating remove the follicle’s target and can interfere with treatment. You may shave between appointments unless your provider tells you otherwise.

Will laser hair removal help ingrown hairs?
Reducing the amount and thickness of hair may help decrease shaving irritation and recurring ingrown hairs. Individual results vary.

Is there downtime?
Most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately. Temporary redness, warmth, or follicular swelling may occur.

Why do I need multiple sessions?
Hair follicles do not all grow at the same time. Multiple sessions are necessary to treat follicles as they enter the active growth stage.
